Shopify's Fall '26 Edition has more than 150 updates. Here are the ones that matter for brand, marketing and store development, in order of urgency.
Checkout is changing before Black Friday

Payment methods are moving to tiles, the form is moving to a stacked layout, and the thank-you page is getting an animation. Custom fields are also coming natively. All of this is "rolling out soon".
Impact: your checkout could change mid-BFCM, and branded checkouts may change the most.
Do: check your checkout every week through BFCM. After the peak, replace field apps with native custom fields.
Rollouts for Black Friday

Rollouts let you schedule theme, checkout, catalogue and discount changes as one launch. They support A/B tests and roll back automatically when a promotion ends.
Impact: you get more control over launches and take on less risk.
Do: use a rollout for your BFCM launch instead of manual midnight publishes.
Script tags and app tokens

Apps can no longer create or update script tags. Apps must also move to expiring tokens before January 2027.
Impact: custom apps and tracking that rely on either will break, and public apps that don't migrate will be delisted.
Do: audit your custom apps and tracking scripts. Migrate them to theme app extensions and web pixels.
New theme architecture

The new theme architecture is in developer preview. It brings Liquid blocks, typed contracts, built-in Tailwind and markdown files that guide AI agents.
Impact: We suspect this is the new standard for theme development.
Do: Incrementally apply block and partial tags, apply doc tag across theme, create AGENTS.md and DESIGN.md files. Consider refactor of templates using all new capabilities.
Canvas and Sidekick

With Canvas and Sidekick, you can now update templates and content, however, Canvas has significant limitations, most notably apps won't work with it making it unusable.
Impact: Unsure of the real benefit of this yet.
Do: add markdown files to your theme that set your brand and design rules, and decide who can publish.
Selling through AI agents

Shoppers can now buy from you in ChatGPT, Google AI Mode and Gemini, Claude, Grok and Meta's Muse.
Impact: your product data, Shopify Catalog eligibility and policies now decide whether your products appear.
Do: check eligibility, tidy your channel product data mapping, and review the policies and FAQs AI agents read in the knowledge base.
Reporting baselines are shifting

Marketing reports now split out traffic sources more clearly, and session counts now filter out bots and respect consent.
Impact: your numbers will move, so last year's comparisons won't line up.
Do: annotate your reports from the change date and reset your baselines, we also recommend having rolling baselines comparing Meta, GA and Shopify to identify spikes up or down in analytics that can throw your numbers significantly.
Your brand on Shop

Your store's branding now syncs automatically to your page in Shop (early access). Your Instagram posts can sync into Shop as shoppable content.
Impact: your brand now shows up well beyond your own website.
Do: check how your page in Shop looks.
Customer data and messaging

Shoppers can now sign in with Shop on lead capture forms built with Klaviyo or Shopify Forms. You can also collect WhatsApp consent at checkout and run automated WhatsApp flows.
Impact: you identify customers earlier, and WhatsApp becomes a new channel.
Do: add Shop sign-in and WhatsApp to your email and SMS plan, ensure Klaviyo features are activated.
Payments

Shop Pay Installments is in early access in Australia. Payouts in multiple currencies are now available on the Advanced and Plus plans.
Impact: you can offer buy now, pay later through Shop Pay and get paid out in more currencies.
Do: if your order values are high, consider Installments, or removing other Buy Now Pay Later apps.
